Money stories for Class 3
Real-life adding and taking away with rupees: one worked story step by step, and 5 story questions to try. No timer, no account.
What it means
Money stories are adding and taking away in disguise. Buying two things means add the prices to find the total. Paying with a bigger note means take away the total from what was paid to find the change.
Worked example: Total and change
- 1Meera buys a puzzle book for ₹145 and a water bottle for ₹189. What does she pay in all?
- 2Add the prices: 145 + 189. Ones: 5 + 9 = 14, write 4 carry 1. Tens: 4 + 8 + 1 = 13, write 3 carry 1. Hundreds: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. Total ₹334.
- 3She pays with a ₹500 note. What is her change?
- 4Take away: 500 - 334. Ones: exchange, 10 - 4 = 6. Tens: 9 - 3 = 6 (after exchanging through the zero). Hundreds: 4 - 3 = 1. Change ₹166.
First add to find the total, then take away from what was paid to find the change.
She pays ₹334 and gets ₹166 in change.
