More, fewer, equal for Class 1
How to compare two numbers, one worked example step by step, and 5 questions to try. No timer, no account.
What it means
To compare two numbers, pair their counters one to one. The set with counters left over is more. The other is fewer. No counters left over on either side means equal. We write this with >, < and =.
Worked example: 7 and 5
- 1Line up 7 counters in one row and 5 in another.
- 2Pair one counter from each row, one pair at a time.
- 3The 5-row runs out first. 2 counters in the 7-row have no partner.
- 4So 7 is more than 5, and 5 is fewer than 7.
7 counters5 counters - 2 orange have no partner
So 7 > 5.
