Subtraction within 20 for Class 1
What taking away to 20 means, one worked example step by step, and 5 questions to try. No timer, no account.
What it means
Subtracting within 20 means starting with a set, taking some away, and counting what remains. When the ones are not enough, a fast way is to take away down to ten first, then take away the rest.
Worked example: 13 - 5
- 1Start with 13: one full ten-frame and 3 loose counters.
- 2Split the 5 into 3 and 2.
- 3Take away 3 first: 13 - 3 = 10.
- 4Take away the last 2: 10 - 2.
8 left5 taken away (3 loose, then 2 from the frame)
So 13 - 5 = 8.
