Addition with carrying for Class 2

What carrying means, one worked example step by step, and 5 questions to try. No timer, no account.

What it means

When the ones add up to ten or more, we cannot write two digits in the ones place. We exchange ten ones for one ten and carry that ten into the tens column. This is called carrying or regrouping.

Worked example: 46 + 37

  1. 1Add the ones: 6 + 7 = 13.
  2. 213 ones = 1 ten and 3 ones. Write 3 in the ones place. Carry 1 ten.
  3. 3Add the tens: 4 + 3 = 7, plus the carried ten = 8 tens.
  4. 48 tens and 3 ones.

The carried ten sits above the tens column. Answer row in orange.

So 46 + 37 = 83.
