Numbers to 1000 for Class 3
How hundreds, tens and ones build and compare numbers, one worked example step by step, and 5 questions to try. No timer, no account.
What it means
Every three-digit number is made of hundreds, tens and ones. In 347, the 3 means 3 hundreds, the 4 means 4 tens and the 7 means 7 ones. To compare two numbers, compare the hundreds first, then the tens, then the ones.
Worked example: Build and compare
- 1Build: 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 7 ones.
- 23 hundreds = 300. 4 tens = 40. 7 ones = 7. Add them: 300 + 40 + 7 = 347.
- 3Compare 352 and 349. Hundreds: 3 = 3, same. Tens: 5 is more than 4.
- 4So 352 is bigger than 349. No need to look at the ones once the tens decide.
Each place holds one digit. 10 ones make a ten, 10 tens make a hundred.
300 + 40 + 7 = 347, and 352 is bigger than 349.
