Halves and quarters for Class 3

Splitting numbers and shapes into equal parts, one worked example step by step, and 5 questions to try. No timer, no account.

What it means

Splitting into equal parts gives fractions. A half is one of 2 equal parts, so a half of a number is that number shared into 2 equal groups. A quarter is one of 4 equal parts: share into 4 equal groups.

Worked example: Half and quarter of 12

  1. 1Start with 12 counters.
  2. 2A half means 2 equal groups: 12 shared into 2 groups is 6 in each. So a half of 12 = 6.
  3. 3A quarter means 4 equal groups: 12 shared into 4 groups is 3 in each. So a quarter of 12 = 3.
  4. 4A quarter is smaller than a half, because the same amount is shared into more groups.

A half of 12: two equal groups of 6

A quarter of 12: four equal groups of 3

Orange and yellow show the equal groups. Each group must have the same count.

A half of 12 = 6. A quarter of 12 = 3.
